Placenames Project

A small subgroup has been established under the Irish language planning ABC to look at the origins and interpretations of the 43 townlands that cover the language planning area between the communities of Knocknacarra and Bearna. We would be very interested in hearing from people with an interest in local history, local history, and community socialisation.

In the coming months, subject to availability of funds, we hope to run lectures and workshops on the subject, including digital mapping which would show, among other things, the housing estates currently within the official Gaeltacht. It would also attempt to identify native Irish speakers in the listed townlands. In the future, we hope to erect attractive signage to ensure that the townlands’ identity is maintained.

Uinseann Mac Thómais is coordinating the efforts of the subgroup and if you would like more information please contact him by phone, Whatsapp, or text at 087 279 7355, or if you would like to participate in the research send an expression of interest to Micheál at optgaeilgeabc@gmail.com
