The Language Plan

The Bearna - Cnoc na Cathrach Language Planning Area is located on the west side of Galway city and is one of 26 Language Planning Areas across Ireland and the largest in the country in terms of population. The 2022 Census showed that 13,043 people lived in the LPT, 5.3% of the population over 3 years of age were daily speakers of Irish and 5.3% of the population over 3 years of age were weekly speakers of Irish.

According to the Gaeltacht Act 2012, each Language Planning Area was required to prepare a language plan, which would set out a plan to strengthen the Irish language in that area. The language plan for Bearna and Cnoc na Cathrach can be seen below.
