Placenames Subgroup

Are you interested in learning about the place where you live?

Gaeilge ABC has established a small subgroup to look at the origins and explanations of the 43 townlands that cover the language planning area between the communities of Knocknacarra and Bearna. We would be very interested in hearing from people with an interest in local history, placename history, and community socialisation.

In the coming months, subject to funding availability, we hope to run lectures and workshops on the subject, including digital mapping that would show, among other things, the housing estates currently within the official Gaeltacht. It would also attempt to identify native Irish speakers in the listed townlands.
